Preparing for Your Bridal Trunk Show Appointment

Posted on April 19th, 2011 by Mandy Webster

In Part 1 of my series on the bridal trunk show, I talked about what exactly a trunk show is. Once you’ve received your invitation and called to make an appointment with your local bridal shop, it’s time to prepare for that appointment. Here are a few things you should know:

In most cases, when you make your appointment to attend the bridal trunk show, the store owner, bridal consultant, or other store representative will probably give you a list of items to bring to the trunk show with you.Fit and flatter style wedding gown at a bridal trunk show

For example Carol, owner of Christy’s Bridal, says she first asks her brides to check her website to see what featured styles they like. Carol’s brides-to-be supply her with a list of style numbers in advance of the trunk show appointment so her consultants can have those wedding gowns ready for the brides when they arrive. But, the preparation for the appointment does not stop there. Following are a few other items Carol recommends for brides to bring to their bridal trunk show appointment.

  • Pictures of bridal gowns in styles you like. These may be magazine clippings or images printed from designer websites. Bring any pictures you might have that will help the bridal consultant determine exactly what style you are looking for.
  • A trusted friend. Bring a friend or family member whose fashion sense is in alignment with your own. This should be someone whose opinion you trust. This person should also be open and honest about her opinions to ensure she provides you with the best input to help you make an educated decision.
  • Camera. Bring a camera for your friend or family member to take pictures of you in each wedding gown. This will be helpful when the time comes to narrow your choices down. Just remember, some bridal shops do not allow brides to take pictures of the wedding dresses, so be sure to ask in advance if this is OK. (Christy’s Bridal does allow photography.)
  • What not to bring: Bridal undergarments are not necessary at this stage of the process. For now, your main concern is choosing the right style.

Carol recommends that you not attend a trunk show until you are in the serious buying phase of choosing your wedding dress. Otherwise, you may find that perfect gown before you’re ready to buy and then find that it’s no longer available when you are ready to purchase.

Of course, you can always find another gown, but the disappointment that comes with finding “the one” and then letting it slip through your fingers can put a damper on your entire wedding planning experience.Bridal veils on display at a bridal trunk show
