Couple marries in Joplin one week after devastating tornados

Posted on May 31st, 2011 by Mandy Webster

McKenzie ‘Brooke’ Watson and fiancé Aaron Cox agonized over whether to go ahead with their wedding in Joplin, MO after devastating tornadoes tore through much of the town just over a week ago. But, family and friends felt the symbol of hope provided by the newlywed couple was just what Joplin needed.

Wedding guest, Lynn Hamper, said, “We all need it: hope for tomorrow. And what better way than a young married couple?”

You might remember the couple from the viral video Cox recorded of himself and his fiancée desperately searching for his sister in the aftermath of the tornado. Sarah Cox, the groom’s sister, feels lucky to have survived despite the total loss of her home. Read more »

Quinceañera: Almost as big as your wedding day!

Posted on May 19th, 2011 by Mandy Webster

Hey, guess what! We recently got some really cool new Quinceañera and Sweet 16 decorations here at Knot The Groom that have me wishing I had a daughter! I’ve only heard of the Quinceañera and have never attended one, so I had no idea what a big deal they are. I did a little research and found that, next to a woman’s wedding, in some countries, the Quinceañera is probably the most exciting and elaborate celebration that will occur in her lifetime.

Bridesmaid Advice from Big Screen “Bridesmaids”

Posted on May 17th, 2011 by Mandy Webster

Bride and BridesmaidSo, you’ve been asked to be a bridesmaid, and of course you’re thrilled… but then the doubts begin to creep in:

  • How much will this cost?
  • Do I really have time for this?
  • Is my best friend going to turn into a bridezilla?

Your role as bridesmaid has the potential to either bring you and your friend closer together or tear you apart.

The sad fact is, some “bridezillas” take the term, “bridesmaid” a little too literally. Unless you’ve opted-in to play bridesmaid for a future queen, don’t feel obligated to wait on your bride hand and foot. Of course, you want to do everything you can to make her day perfect. What friend wouldn’t? But at the same time, you have to save your own sanity.

A recent Your Tango article shares bridesmaid advice from the stars of the new movie, Bridesmaids.

The best advice, in my opinion, came from Wendi McClendon-Covey who plays bridesmaid Rita. McClendon-Covey says, “Before you say yes, state your boundaries and say this is what I’m willing to do and willing to spend.” Read more »

En Route to the Mount Mary College Fashion Show

Are you En Route?

By Guest Blogger, Whitney Gilles

The first order of business in this spring’s Fashion Show Coordination class at Mount Mary College was to decide on the theme of the show. We started by blurting out unrelated concepts and ideas that could work for a show, talking about recent runway inspirations and current events. By our second class, the class had narrowed it down to the clear frontrunner: “En Route.”

En Route student designer fashion show invitation

The official invitation for the 2011 Student Designer Fashion Show at Mount Mary College was designed by student, Barbara Kolb, Graphic Design '12.

“En Route” captures countless images and works on a number of levels, which is why we were drawn to it in the first place. The show is a collection of 36 designers’ garments, and we wanted to work around all of the distinctly different creative directions they were all taking. We also saw how garments are en route, from idea to sketch, pattern to form, draping to sewing, and finally traveling down the runway.

Just as each student’s instincts take their designs down a different road, each designer pursues a different career path. Some girls want to work in product development for companies like Kohl’s and Target. Others want to open boutiques or launch their own line. But even those who possess similar career aspirations won’t end up taking the same journey to achieve them.

It is only fitting that our runway would look like a road to capture this idea of movement, progression, and travelling down life’s road. En Route also lets us acknowledge the major change in this year’s show.

Since 1967, the annual student designer fashion show has been held on the Mount Mary College campus. This year, we are moving into new territory and heading downtown to the Bradley Pavilion in the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. In this case, En Route not only means moving venues, but also the progress Mount Mary has made in the development of their fashion program and in bringing a one-of-a-kind (or ooak couture, as some of the girls like to call it) fashion showcase to the city of Milwaukee.
