Edible Wedding Favors: Whoopie Pies

Today’s featured petite sweet wedding favor is the whoopie pie. This whoopie pie post is the first of Knot the Groom’s edible wedding favor series.

Happy Thanksgiving from our family here at Knot the Groom!  Today, in honor of this very American (and delicious) holiday, we are talking about food. More specifically, the sweet treats popping up everywhere, from bakeries to Starbucks, and making their way onto wedding reception dessert tables.

Whoopie Pies

If you have read my semi-recent post about Gwen & Kevin’s Pennsylvania farm wedding, you already have an inside scoop on the whoopie pie trend. Like newlyweds Gwen and Kevin, many couples are providing individual serving size sweets for their guests as wedding favors and special treats—like whoopie pies!  Butcher’s Farm Market made vanilla, chocolate and pumpkin flavored pies for this wedding.

So what is a whoopie pie?

Whoopie pies are essentially cake sandwiches—frosting sandwiched by two pieces of rounded cake. Also called “gobs”, these pies are New England staples and traditional Pennsylvania Amish treats.  A New York Times article did their own research on the story behind these homegrown treats: “Food historians believe whoopie pies originated in Pennsylvania, where they were baked by Amish women and put in farmers’ lunchboxes. Tired from a morning’s work, the farmers purportedly would shout ‘Whoopie!’ if they discovered one of the desserts in their lunch pails.”

You do not need to be an Amish wife to spark excitement for these yummy treats at your wedding!
