Across the country, wedding season is just beginning. But in Milwaukee, it is runway season. Thanks to Mount Mary College, a small private school with a big fashion department, one-of-a-kind creations will be travelling down the runway this Friday, May 13th. The show, “En Route,” will feature student-designer garments in five major categories: urban/ethnic inspired, club, casual/resort, tailored, and (of course) formal. I will be sharing insider information in the days leading up to the show and getting you ready for what we are hoping will be the biggest fashion event in the Midwest in recent history.
I should start off by telling you a bit about myself. My name is Whitney Gilles, and I’m a junior at Mount Mary College. Fashion students at Mount Mary can choose to major in Apparel Product Development (design) or Merchandise Management. I transferred from the University of Wisconsin – Madison to take advantage of the latter degree, and I could not be happier with that decision.
My first semester at Mount Mary, I started a Milwaukee fashion blog called MKE MerchSearch, a site dedicated to highlighting the boutique fashions of our city. I got girls together from my classes to give fashion advice, pick out key wardrobe pieces from local shops and recommend fun pieces that can be worn more ways than you would think.
One of the accessories I suggested even ended up in an issue of InStyle Magazine two months later! Our first photo shoot at Stephanie Horne Boutique in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward was an eye-opening experience, and one that ignited a passion in me for directing photo shoots.
Second semester, I enrolled in the Fashion Show Coordination class, a course in which the students create a theme and produce the annual student-designer fashion show. The instructors assigned me to the media and PR committee, where I put my website management experience to work by managing a blog and Facebook page for the show.
Just this month, I received the Knot The Groom “Social Media Award” for my efforts to use these newer forms of technology to advertise the show. If you read the blogs here, you already know what an impact fashion blogs have on what we know, what we buy, and what inspires us. I hope that in the next few days I will inspire you to support local fashion and new designers. If you live in the area, mark your calendars and buy your tickets now for the event of the season!
Be sure to stop by again tomorrow to find out more about the inspiration for the show.
