When planning your wedding speech, consider adding anecdotes to make the moment more personal. The best speeches I have heard have always included fun or touching stories about the bride and groom. On the other hand, traditional quotes or blessings can be just as personal and memorable, so I suggest a speech that includes both a story and a poem or saying. I still remember the blessing my Irish grandfather gave at my cousin’s wedding years ago. Although not original, it was touching and embodied the traditions of our family heritage:
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Another Irish Wedding Toast
May you be poor in misfortune,
Rich in blessings,
Slow to make enemies,
Quick to make friends,
But rich or poor, quick or slow,
May you know nothing but
Happiness from this day forward.
Native American Wedding Blessing
Now you feel no rain
for each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold
for each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there will be no loneliness for you.
Now you are two persons,
but there is only one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place,
to enter into the days of your togetherness.
And may your days be good and long together.
Wedding Quotes I Love
You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep
because reality is finally better than your dreams. ~Dr. Seuss
You don’t marry someone you can live with – you marry the person who you cannot live without
~ Author Unknown
Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get – only with what you are expecting to give – which is everything.
Married couples who love each other tell each other a thousand things without talking.
Check it out–Something more alternative:
- Project Wedding posted cute, alternative wedding vows in the spirit of one of my favorite authors, Dr. Seuss.
- Not surprising, Hallmark has a collection of great quotes. These are also perfect for writing inside cards! My favorite:
Here’s to loving,
Here’s to wooing,
Here’s to happily “I do”-ing!
Here’s to hugging,
Here’s to kissing,
Here’s to “ever-after-bliss”-ing!
- And finally: “I was married by a judge. I should have asked for a jury.” ~Groucho Marx
